OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1968, the UCLA Black Alumni Association (UBAA) emerged from the visionary efforts of leaders like former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Larry Hollifield, Herschel Ramsey, Winston Doby, and others who sought to unite and uplift UCLA’s alumni of color. They laid the foundation for UBAA’s enduring commitment to foster equality and connection among African-American alumni, students, faculty, and community members.

In 2006, following the passage of Proposition 209, the number of African-American freshmen at UCLA dropped to just 96. Recognizing the threat to the existence of African-American students at UCLA, then Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Winston Doby developed a strategic plan to increase African-American student enrollment. UBAA responded by launching a scholarship initiative to attract and support top-tier African-American applicants. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, UBAA has since awarded over $10 million in scholarships, empowering more than 800 students to pursue their academic goals and thrive at UCLA.

In recognition of its decades-long impact, UBAA was honored with the 2018 UCLA Award for Network of the Year, celebrating 50 years of service and leadership within the Bruin community.

Today, UBAA continues to build on the legacy established in 1968—championing Black Bruin Excellence and ensuring that future generations are seen, supported, and celebrated.
